January 24, 2011, Louisville, KY – Papa John’s is offering to give a free pizza to everyone in America if Super Bowl XLV goes into overtime.

To be eligible for their free pie, US residents must visit the chain’s website and register for the Papa Points online customer loyalty program. All registrations received before 11:59pm ET on February 5 will be awarded 25 Papa Points – the number needed to redeem for a large, three-topping pizza – if the Super Bowl goes into overtime on February 6.

Points will be credited to loyalty accounts the following morning, on February 7. The free points will be redeemable through June 30.

“The Super Bowl is the largest stage in all of sports, and being the official pizza sponsor of Super Bowl XLV, there’s no better event or day to serve as a platform for our largest offer ever,” said Andrew Varga, Papa John’s chief marketing officer. “We’re going to be working overtime Super Bowl Sunday to make sure our customers have a great day with the highest quality pizza, and we’re hoping for an unprecedented overtime so that we can deliver on this offer for America.”

This football post-season, overtime has had more significance than ever before. Prior to the 2010 season, the NFL adopted a modified sudden death format for post-season games. The new format gives each team the opportunity to possess the ball at least once in the overtime quarter, unless the team that receives the overtime kickoff scores a touchdown on its first possession.

To date, no Super Bowl has ever gone into overtime.
